Michigan’s median age runs from 21.3 in East Lansing to 48.2 in Trenton: the youngest and oldest cities
Michigan's cities span nearly 27 years in median age. Here is who is youngest, who is oldest, and why two kinds of young city look so different.
Key takeaways
- East Lansing (21.3) and Allendale (21.5) are Michigan's youngest places of 10,000 or more; Trenton (48.2) and Grand Haven (46.8) are the oldest.
- 66 of 101 places are younger than Michigan's median age of 40.2, and 35 are older.
- Wayne County places account for 7 of the 25 oldest, and Macomb County places for 5.
- Hamtramck is young (26.5) but family-centered: 53.1% of adults are married and 48.7% of households have children.
- County medians range from 30.1 in Isabella County to 60.0 in Alcona County.

From 21.3 to 48.2: a 26.9-year gap between Michigan’s youngest and oldest cities
Half the residents of East Lansing are 21.3 or younger. Half the residents of Trenton, a Downriver city on the Detroit River, are 48.2 or older. Those two numbers mark the ends of Michigan’s age spectrum among 101 places with 10,000 or more people, and the 26.9 years between them is roughly the distance between a college sophomore and that student’s parent.
Michigan’s overall median age is 40.2. Of the 101 places, 35 are older than that and 66 are younger. That tilt makes sense: cities and suburbs draw students and young workers, while Michigan’s oldest counties are largely rural, with few or no places above the 10,000-person cutoff. At the county level, the range is even wider, from Isabella County (30.1) to Alcona County (60.0).
What the data shows: two kinds of “young,” and an older Downriver and lakeshore
The oldest places cluster in a few settings. Wayne County holds 7 of the 25 oldest, led by Trenton, Woodhaven (45.6), Livonia (44.8), Grosse Pointe Woods (43.6) and Allen Park (43.1). Macomb County adds five, including New Baltimore (44.7) and St. Clair Shores (43.8). Along the lakes, Grand Haven (46.8), Alpena (46.0), Escanaba (44.4) and Traverse City (42.7) are all well above the state figure. Oakland County’s Beverly Hills (46.0) is the oldest suburb in the ranking and also one of its most married, with 64.0% of adults currently married.
The youngest places split into two very different groups:
- College towns. East Lansing, Allendale (21.5), Mount Pleasant (23.9), Kalamazoo (26.9), Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti (27.7 each) and Marquette (30.9) are shaped by students. In these places, most adults have never married: 75.2% in East Lansing and 68.4% in Allendale.
- Young-family cities. Hamtramck (26.5), Melvindale (31.3) and Holland (31.7) are young for a different reason. Hamtramck has a median age of 26.5, yet 53.1% of its adults are married and 48.7% of its households include children, the second-highest share in Michigan. Melvindale’s household share with children is 35.1%. Here, youth means kids, not dorms.
Grand Rapids (32.3) and Dearborn (33.3) round out the youngest dozen. Detroit’s median age is 35.2.

Methodology: median age from the American Community Survey
Median age comes from ACS 2024 5-year estimates (responses collected 2020 through 2024), table B01002, Median Age by Sex, retrieved through the Census Reporter API. The median is the midpoint: half of residents are younger and half are older. The marital columns come from table B12001 and describe adults 15 and older. All 101 Michigan cities, villages and Census-designated places with at least 10,000 residents are included; the county figures quoted above come from the same release.
The only arithmetic in this report is the 26.9-year gap (48.2 minus 21.3) and counts of places above or below the state median.
Limitations
- A median hides the shape. A city with many young children and many retirees can have the same median as a city full of 40-year-olds.
- Students living at school, including in dorms, are generally counted there, which pulls university towns sharply younger.
- Smaller and rural Michigan is missing. Many of the state’s oldest communities fall below 10,000 people and are not ranked here.
- Estimates carry margins of error and reflect a 2020 to 2024 average, not a single year.
How life stage shapes what couples and families talk about
Age data does not predict how anyone’s relationship is going. A 22-year-old and a 68-year-old can both be in thriving partnerships. What life stage does shape is the kind of questions that come up at the kitchen table.
In younger places, those questions often center on beginnings. Picture two graduate students in Ann Arbor deciding whether to move for one person’s job, or a young couple in Hamtramck balancing small children, work and extended family. Conversations about commitment, money, roles and how to blend two family traditions are common at this stage, and some couples choose premarital counseling as a way to talk them through before a wedding.
In older places, the conversations may turn to transitions: children leaving home, retirement changing daily rhythms, caring for an aging parent, or rediscovering each other after decades of busy schedules. Imagine a Trenton couple, newly retired, who suddenly have a full week together and realize they have not planned one in thirty years. That adjustment can be joyful and also take some renegotiating.
Whatever the stage, support is available if and when it feels useful. Iryna Morhunova-Sutton, LLMFT, works with individuals, couples and families online, for clients located anywhere in Michigan, which can make sessions easier for retirees who prefer not to drive in winter and for students with packed schedules. Common questions
What is the youngest city in Michigan?
Among places with at least 10,000 residents, East Lansing has the lowest median age at 21.3, followed closely by Allendale at 21.5 and Mount Pleasant at 23.9. All three are home to large universities. Hamtramck, at 26.5, is the youngest place where students are not the main reason for the low median.
What is the oldest city in Michigan?
Among the 101 places with 10,000 or more residents, Trenton has the highest median age at 48.2. Grand Haven (46.8), Beverly Hills (46.0) and Alpena (46.0) follow. Smaller communities and rural counties can be older still; Alcona County's median age is 60.0, the highest of Michigan's counties.
What is the median age in Michigan?
Michigan's median age is 40.2 years, according to the Census Bureau's ACS 2024 5-year estimates. That means half of residents are younger than 40.2 and half are older. Of the 101 Michigan places in this report, 35 are older than the state median and 66 are younger.
Why are Michigan's college towns so young?
Students living at school, including in dorms, are generally counted there, so university towns like East Lansing, Allendale and Mount Pleasant have very low median ages. Most adults there have never married: 75.2% in East Lansing and 68.4% in Allendale, compared with 34.2% statewide.
