Oakland County is a place of long drives between short distances. A couple might live in Novi, work in Southfield and Troy, and spend Sunday with parents in Rochester Hills. When the relationship needs attention, the question is not only “who should we see?” but “where, and when, can we both actually get there?”
This page is a data-backed guide to therapy and marriage counseling in Oakland County. Iryna Morhunova-Sutton, LLMFT, is based in Troy, the county’s most populous city, and sees individuals, couples and families online only, anywhere in Michigan, which can help when two schedules and two commutes refuse to line up.
One county, very different household patterns
About 1.28 million people live in Oakland County, according to the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey, roughly one Michigander in eight. Half of residents 15 and older (50.5 percent) are married, a little above the statewide 47.6 percent, and 10.5 percent are divorced. About 26.4 percent of households include someone under 18, and 48.6 percent are married-couple households. The county’s median household income, $97,760, is about a third higher than Michigan’s $72,875.
Averages hide a lot here. In Troy, Birmingham and Rochester Hills, roughly 57 percent of residents 15 and older are married; in Royal Oak, the figure is 39.8 percent, and only 17.3 percent of households there include children. The county is also more international and more home-based than Michigan overall: 13.3 percent of residents were born outside the U.S. (7.2 percent statewide), and 20.2 percent of workers worked from home (13.5 percent statewide).
These figures describe places, not anyone’s relationship. What they suggest is practical: a young renter in Royal Oak, a long-married couple in Birmingham and a three-generation household in Troy may all live within a few miles of one another and still want quite different things from a therapist.
How many marriage and family therapists practice in Oakland County?
We counted records in the federal NPI Registry that carry the marriage and family therapist taxonomy and list a Michigan practice location, then assigned each practice ZIP code to a county using the Census Bureau’s ZIP-to-county relationship file. As of October 7, 2026, 216 of Michigan’s 1,016 such records (162 of them individual clinicians) had an Oakland County practice ZIP code. That is about 1.7 records per 10,000 residents, compared with about 1.0 statewide, and about 21 percent of the state’s MFT records in a county with about 13 percent of its people.
| City | NPI records with the MFT taxonomy and a practice location in the city |
|---|---|
| Troy | 30 |
| Southfield | 30 |
| Royal Oak | 23 |
| Rochester Hills | 14 |
| Novi | 13 |
| Birmingham | 8 |
The table shows clustering along the I-75 and Woodward corridors. Troy and Royal Oak each have roughly 3.4 to 4.0 records per 10,000 residents, while much of the county’s north and west has far fewer. An NPI record does not prove someone is currently licensed or accepting clients, and many therapists who see couples hold other licenses under different taxonomy codes, so read these counts as a sense of scale.
Is Oakland County a mental health shortage area?
Not as a whole. In HRSA’s mental health Health Professional Shortage Area data (file updated October 7, 2026), Oakland County has no county-wide geographic designation. HRSA does list a designated low-income population shortage area in Pontiac, and a low-income designation covering several southeast Oakland communities is listed as proposed for withdrawal. In practice, access here depends less on whether therapists exist and more on cost, insurance, schedules and fit.
Narrowing a long list of Oakland County options
With this many practices, a few filters save time. Our credentials guide explains which licenses center on couple and family systems, and checking a license on LARA confirms that a therapist is in good standing. For partners, the Michigan couples therapy cost guide helps you compare fees, and the Troy couples therapy guide goes deeper on options in the county’s largest city.

Online sessions from anywhere in the county
Iryna works by secure video only, so where you live in Oakland County does not change anything: a couple in Holly and a couple in Ferndale meet with her the same way, from a private room at home. She has no office and does not offer in-person sessions. You need to be in Michigan during each session; our online therapy page covers the details.

Common questions
How many marriage and family therapists are in Oakland County?
As of October 7, 2026, 216 records in the federal NPI Registry with the marriage and family therapist taxonomy listed an Oakland County practice ZIP code, about 21 percent of Michigan's 1,016 such records and about 1.7 per 10,000 residents. NPI records do not confirm active licensure, and many couples therapists hold other licenses, so verify any individual on Michigan LARA.
Is Oakland County a mental health shortage area?
Not county-wide. HRSA's mental health shortage area data, updated October 2026, shows no geographic designation for the whole county. It does list a designated low-income population shortage area in Pontiac, and a southeast Oakland low-income designation is proposed for withdrawal. Designations change, so check HRSA's HPSA Find tool for the latest status.
What is the Oakland County crisis line now?
Oakland Community Health Network's crisis line, 888-238-0611, is available 24/7 by call, chat or text. OCHN took over crisis services directly, replacing the older Common Ground line, so some directories still list an outdated 800 number. For domestic violence, HAVEN's line is 248-334-1274. In an emergency, call 911.
Which Oakland County cities have the most marriage and family therapists?
In NPI Registry data from October 7, 2026, Troy and Southfield each had 30 records with the marriage and family therapist taxonomy, followed by Royal Oak with 23, Rochester Hills with 14, Novi with 13 and Birmingham with 8. Counts reflect listed practice locations, not who is accepting new clients.
