Metro Detroit at a glance: 3.93 million people and 280 marriage and family therapists

Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties are home to 3,931,937 people, 39.0% of everyone in Michigan. They also account for 280 of the state’s 730 marriage and family therapists (MFTs) found in the federal NPI Registry, or 38.4%: 0.71 MFTs per 10,000 residents, close to the statewide 0.72.

That regional average hides a sharp split. Oakland County has 159 MFTs on record, 1.24 per 10,000 residents and the fifth-highest rate among Michigan’s 83 counties. Wayne County, the state’s most populous, has 74 (0.42 per 10,000), and Macomb has 47 (0.53). Below, those numbers sit beside marriage, divorce and family data for 51 places.

How this report defines Metro Detroit

For this report, Metro Detroit means the three core counties: Wayne, Oakland and Macomb. We do not include Washtenaw, Livingston, Monroe or St. Clair counties, which some definitions of Southeast Michigan add; those appear in our Mid-Michigan briefing. The 51 cities and Census-designated places analyzed here hold 2,592,710 residents, about two-thirds (65.9%) of the three-county total.

County Population Adults married Adults divorced Households with children Median age MFTs on record MFTs per 10,000
Wayne 1,772,259 38.5% 11.3% 28.5% 37.9 74 0.42
Oakland 1,279,825 50.5% 10.5% 26.4% 41.3 159 1.24
Macomb 879,853 47.8% 11.1% 27.4% 41.3 47 0.53

Michigan comparison: 47.6% married, 11.4% divorced, 27.1% of households with children, median age 40.2.

Marriage: from 64.0% in Beverly Hills to 22.3% in Detroit

Picture two Saturday mornings ten miles apart. In Beverly Hills, nearly two of every three adults are married (64.0%), the highest share in the region. In Detroit, 22.3% are, the lowest. Grosse Pointe Park (61.6%), Troy (57.8%), Novi (57.4%), Birmingham (57.2%) and Rochester Hills (56.9%) round out the top of the list.

Twenty of the 51 places are above Michigan’s married share. Half of them are in Oakland County. The rest include Grosse Pointe Park and Grosse Pointe Woods, Hamtramck, Dearborn, Livonia and Allen Park in Wayne County, Downriver’s Flat Rock (51.5%) and Trenton (51.1%), and Macomb’s New Baltimore (53.7%) and Sterling Heights (51.8%). At the county level, Oakland (50.5%) and Macomb (47.8%) sit near or above the state, while Wayne (38.5%) is well below it, a figure that partly reflects Detroit’s 22.3%.

Divorce: a wide range, with Hamtramck and the Grosse Pointes lowest

The share of adults who are currently divorced ranges from 3.8% in Hamtramck to 17.2% in the city of Wayne. At the low end are Hamtramck, Grosse Pointe Park (4.7%), Troy (6.4%) and Grosse Pointe Woods (7.6%). Twenty-seven of the 51 places are above the state’s 11.4%.

“currently divorced” counts people who divorced and have not remarried. It is a snapshot, not a yearly divorce rate. The CDC’s national figure of 2.4 divorces per 1,000 people (2023, provisional) measures something different, new divorces in a year, and cannot be compared directly. For statewide rankings, see divorce across Michigan’s cities.

Families with children: Hamtramck leads, Ferndale and Royal Oak trail

Hamtramck again stands out: 48.7% of its households include someone under 18, the highest in the region and second in the state. Beverly Hills (37.3%), Dearborn (35.2%), Melvindale (35.1%) and Novi (34.9%) follow. Ferndale (12.6%), Wixom (16.6%), Madison Heights (17.2%) and Royal Oak (17.3%) have the lowest shares. Twenty-four of the 51 places are above the Michigan figure.

Where Metro Detroit’s MFTs practice

By practice city, the largest numbers of MFT NPI records are in Detroit (40), Southfield (37), Troy (33), Royal Oak (23), Farmington Hills (20), and Novi and Rochester Hills (16 each). Twelve places have none on record, including Taylor (62,081 residents), St. Clair Shores (58,140) and Lincoln Park (39,257). Four of the five busiest practice cities are in Oakland County, which fits Oakland’s higher county rate. Our statewide report on therapist density by county places these figures in context.

Methodology

Population, marital status and household figures come from the U.S. Census Bureau’s ACS 2024 5-year estimates (2020 through 2024), retrieved through the Census Reporter API: tables B01003 (population), B12001 (marital status, adults 15 and older) and B11005 (households with people under 18). County MFT counts come from the CMS NPPES NPI Registry, retrieved 2026-10-08: individual providers with the Marriage and Family Therapist taxonomy (106H00000X) and a Michigan practice location, assigned to a county by the Census ZIP code tabulation area centroid of their practice ZIP. The place column is a separate registry query: all MFT-taxonomy records (individuals and organizations) listing that city as the practice location.

Our arithmetic: regional population and MFT totals are sums of the three counties; 39.0% and 38.4% are those totals divided by Michigan’s 10,077,761 residents and 730 MFTs; 0.71 per 10,000 is 280 divided by 3,931,937, times 10,000; 65.9% is the 51 places’ combined population divided by the regional total.

Limitations

  • An NPI is not a license check. The registry does not confirm that a therapist is actively licensed or seeing clients. MFTs who bill under an organization’s NPI or another taxonomy are not counted at the county level.
  • Place and county counts differ by design. Place records include organizations and depend on how a practice writes its city name, so they do not sum to the county totals.
  • Other professionals are missing, and Census figures are five-year estimates with margins of error. Psychologists, licensed professional counselors and clinical social workers also see couples and families but are outside this count.

What these numbers mean for Metro Detroit couples and families

These statistics describe neighborhoods, not anyone’s marriage. A high divorced share does not mean a city’s couples are struggling, and a high married share does not mean they are thriving.

For someone in Taylor or St. Clair Shores, the nearest MFT on record may be in another city. Online sessions remove that distance. Iryna Morhunova-Sutton, LLMFT, is based in Troy and works only by video, with individuals, couples and families anywhere in Michigan, so a session can fit between a work shift and a school pickup with no drive on I-696.
